The fluttering of the butterfly: the permanence of the ephemeral
Can the gentle flapping of a butterfly in Buenos Aires generate a hurricane on the other side of the world? According to chaos theory, small changes in the initial conditions of a dynamic system can have large, even unpredictable effects. Something that is known as the butterfly effect. In my work, an almost imperceptible gesture is captured and sets in motion a series of reactions in an algorithmic system of particles that amplify and make that movement visible. At the same time, this affects the sound generation, producing distortions and destroying the original sound to build a new one. Our actions, large or small, have effects that are often unknown to us. This system allows us to perceive how our body, just by moving through space, can unleash amplified effects. Our footprint is visible in image and sound and the perception of change is immediate and surprising.
